Counseling Center

The Shaw University Counseling Center offers free and confidential services, delivered by competent and experienced counseling professionals. We offer short-term individual, couples and group counseling to Shaw University students. The counseling center’s staff is dedicated to assisting students with their psychological and emotional needs in efforts to help students make better decisions and healthier choices which ultimately lead to greater academic performance and an increase in overall student retention. We also provide interventions for students with substance abuse needs. The Counseling Center is a place where services are nonjudgmental.  It is a place where students will find understanding and acceptance in whatever they are going through. Along with psychological services, the counseling center also offers disability services for those students identified with a disability. The staff takes pride in their work and look forward to taking the collegiate journey with each and every Shaw University student.

Emergency Incidents

If an incident ie Mental or Health Related occurs in the Residence Halls, please follow these procedures:

  • Resident Manager or RA on duty should record the incident using the incident report form.
  • Upon assessing the incident, contact the Campus Police and Security, 919-546-8249.
  • Campus Police will contact the VP Student Affairs or the Counseling Center’s staff for all Mental Health related incidents and call 919-546-8525 or dial 911 for EMS assistance.
  • Campus police will contact the Health Center for Medical or Health related incidents. 919-546-8286 for Nurse or University Physician or dial 911 for EMS assistance.
  • Incidents that occur off campus, all communications should be forwarded to the campus police and security office who will forward to the VP or Counseling Center or Health Center’s depending on the incident. 
  • Campus Police serves as a filtering source to ensure that all incidents are addressed in an expeditious, efficient and time sensitive manner.
  • Mrs. Carver and Nurse Morgan should receive a copy of all discharge papers that may suggest follow up appointments, therapy treatment or medications

The task of the Disability Services Program is to offer quality services and reasonable and effective accommodations to students with disabilities in order to enhance their academic success, participation in educational programs, and quality of campus life. Each qualified person, based on accurate documentation, will receive appropriate accommodations to ensure equal access to educational opportunities and activities in the most integrated setting possible.

Submit Documentation

Disability Services (DS) determines eligibility according to the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. Based on the documented functional limitations caused by a disability, DS determines reasonable accommodations to ensure individuals with disabilities have equal access to all programs and services.
  • Submit documentation from an appropriately credentialed professional dated within the    student, and recommended accommodations. The guide for services are located in the student’s disability services handbook and are online. If you have additional information or documents that are not included in our handbook, please send what you have.

Shaw University students have free, 24/7/365 access to medical and mental telehealth services, from anywhere in the United States. Students can register with their .edu email on the TimelyCare app or to receive the following services for free:

  • Medical: 24/7, on-demand or scheduled access to a medical provider that can treat a wide range of common illnesses like cold and flu, sinus infection, allergies and more
  • TalkNow: 24/7, on-demand access to a mental health professional to talk about anything at anytime
  • Scheduled Counseling: scheduled appointments to meet with a licensed counselor
  • Health Coaching: work on improving healthy lifestyle behaviors (body image, meal planning, sleep issues, etc.)
  • Psychiatry: scheduled appointments available through referral
  • Group Sessions: Weekly Guided Meditation and Yoga Group Sessions, plus specialized sessions throughout the year.
