We are committed to ensuring that every scholar that comes to Shaw gets the financial support that they need. Since its founding 1865, Shaw has been provided to provided premier education to those who may not have access otherwise. A student's financial
circumstance should not prevent them from receiving a college education. Meeting the financial needs and reducing debt of our students’ is one University’s biggest priorities. It is through the generosity of our alumni, parents, and friends that we
are able to fulfill this commitment.

Establishing a New, Named Scholarship
Creating a named scholarship at Shaw helps the University optimize our resources and deliver the best education and experience possible for our incredibly talented students. By establishing a scholarship, you also have a meaningful naming opportunity
that allows you to create a legacy or honor people who have had a profound impact on your life. There are two types of named scholarships: Annual and Endowed. These scholarships are awarded to deserving students based upon area of interest, leadership
potential, merit, academic achievement and/or other criteria. Scholarship donors are provided with the name of their recipient and are given the opportunity to meet the student at a campus event.
The criteria should be flexible and general to guarantee the widest possible pool of applicants. Acceptable award criteria may include: minimum GPA; specific major, program, department, school, or college; undergraduate or graduate status; class standing;
residency.
Endowed Scholarships
Each endowed named scholarship is permanently endowed when the fund reaches a minimum of $25,000. Awards are made from earnings off the principal. Guidelines are established by the donor and a member of the Office for Institutional Advancement. Once the
fund reaches endowment status, awards will be made from the earnings of the fund based on University spending guidelines. The principal will remain intact and earnings are applied to the principal. Subsequent gifts to the scholarship are also applied
to the principal. As the principal grows, so may the amount and/or number of awards.

Annual Named Scholarships
Donors may establish a named scholarship that does not require an endowment. Named annual scholarships are designed to encourage scholarship support at annual levels. Donors wishing to establish a Named Annual Scholarship with specified award
criteria must pledge annual gifts of $1,000 or more for at least a five-year period. The gift may be awarded for as many years as the funds are donated.
During that time, the funds will go directly to aiding a student with demonstrated financial need. The name associated with this fund will remain with the fund until such time as the fund is depleted or discontinued.
For gifts less than $1,000, donors may specify the college, school, department, or program where they wish to direct their scholarship gift or they may make a gift to the general scholarship fund. The general scholarship fund enables Shaw University
to pool the resources of many donors and to make awards wherever the need is greatest. This fund may also be used to attract and retain academically talented students, many of whom receive competitive scholarship offers from other institutions.
