Men’s Initiative

A unit of the Office of Student Retention, the Men's Initiative plans, implements, and assesses academic and social support programs. We specifically target undergraduate students who identify as men at Shaw University. Our goal is to foster a culture of excellence by providing intrusive advising, peer and professional mentoring, and cultural enlightenment that creates a strong sense of belonging.

Students who regularly engage the Men's Initiative staff and its high-impact programs will leave better equipped to achieve student success. This is because we coordinate multiple retention-based programs each academic term, and often collaborate with strategic campus partners such as Housing & Residential Life, The Counseling Center, Student Activities, and the Center for Racial and Social Justice.

Below are programs and students services that the Men's Initiative has facilitated or will facilitate in the future:

Programs:

  • How to Tie A Tie
  • Chat & Chew Focus Group
  • Barbershop Talk Series
  • Brothers of Umoja Rites of Passage (new)

Services:

  • Residential Checks-Ins
  • One-on-One Success Planning
  • Student Crisis Advocacy
  • Mentor & Leadership Development
