Alexis Hill's Summer Internship Prepares Her for a Bright Future

Meet Alexis Hill, a rising senior from Columbus, Georgia majoring in Business and Management. This summer, she’s interning at contractor Growth Management Services.

What's the biggest difference between the work world and the school world?
The biggest difference for me would be waking up every morning at 6:30 a.m. in order to get myself ready and presentable for the day, and leaving in enough time to avoid traffic and make it to work by 8:30 a.m. I've spoiled myself with taking online and late classes, so I'm not used to being up so early! 

What's the most important lesson you've learned so far in your internship?
So far the most important lesson I've learned is to really stay focused, listen, and don't be afraid to ask for help. Nine times out of ten when you are stuck on something, someone in your team can help things flow better and take the words that are jumbled in your head and help them make sense

What's the biggest challenge you've had to overcome so far? How did you overcome it?
My biggest challenge I've had to overcome is getting enough rest the night before. I'm a night owl, so I am used to staying up all night. I cant so that anymore! I've had to learn to just unplug from everything an hour before I plan to head to bed. That means no social media! No phone screen in my face!

How has Shaw University prepared you for your internship and future career? 
Shaw University has prepared me for my internship by helping me build a strong work ethic. Being placed in the internship has definitely helped me get at least one foot into the door of my career path.  

What are your plans after graduating?
My plans after graduating are to remain in the Raleigh area. I hope to be working for a great company while also working on branding myself.

What are your long-term career plans and goals?
A long-term goal is to own a coffee shop later down the line. I want to see an increase in black-owned businesses. I also want to build a network that connects female small business owners and entrepreneurs here in the RDU and surrounding areas. Ultimately my goal is to empower women and young girls.
