University Weather Policy
If severe weather threatens Shaw University, the Vice President for Operations, in consultation with the Vice President for Student Affairs and University’s Chief of Police, will decide if the University will open, close or report a delayed opening. Shaw is committed to fulfilling its instructional obligations, so it is the University’s intent to conduct classes as long as it can maintain reasonable conditions and safety on campus, and the roads in the immediate areas are reasonably passable.
The Vice President for Operations, in conjunction with other campus departments, will monitor conditions during a weather alert. The University takes into account the condition of campus parking lots and roads; the availability of uninterrupted electrical service; the condition of state and local roads as indicated by road and storm advisories; weather forecasts; ice, wind and severely cold temperatures.
During inclement weather, road conditions quickly deteriorate. The North Carolina Department of Transportation recommends staying off the roads until conditions improve. Please review tips from the National Weather Service Opens a New Window. on how to stay safe before, during and after a winter storm. If an emergency situation arises, please be sure to contact Campus Police and Security at 919-546-8249.
