In recognition of National Women’s History Month, Shaw University celebrated SLAY Week on March 13-16, 2017 for SLAY Week. SLAY Week is a week of activities and sessions that promote women’s achievements and contributions to history. More notably, this week honors and highlights extraordinary women as an immediate example of "impact" and "influence" to the women’s history narrative. All events were FREE and open to students, faculty, staff,alumni and the general public.

 Bahby Banks
Dr. Bahby Banks

Dr. Bahby Banks speaks to students from middle school to college about academic success, professional development, effective networking, college preparation and entrepreneurship. She recently launched ENVISION Empowerment Experience™—an interactive workshop for women residing in the Triangle. Dr. Banks received her B.S. from Florida A&M University, Master of Public Health in Epidemiology and Biostatistics from Boston University and her Doctorate of Philosophy in Health Behavior and Health Education from UNC at Chapel Hill.  LaMona Davis
LaMona Davis

LaMona Davis is the owner of ANu' Bodywork Therapy. She is a dedicated and caring licensed massage and bodywork therapist with over five years of experience. LaMona specializes in relaxation as well as Deep Tissue, Prenatal, HotStone Therapy, Oncology, Reflexology and Chair Massage. Using a combination of techniques, LaMona works with each client to address their individual needs.  She is passionate about the positive affects of massage and believes that massage therapy is a means to maintaining wellness and balance.

 Charnaie Gordon
Charnaie Gordon

Charnaie Gordon is a wife, mom of two, computer programmer by day, blogger/influencer by night, self-proclaimed lifelong learner, podcast junkie and Distinguished Toastmaster. She holds a Bachelor's degree from Southern Connecticut State University and a Master's degree from Sacred Heart University, both in Computer Science. Her  blog, Here Wee Read, is where she is currently expressing her creativity and passion for reading and literacy. Charnaie is also a contributor to Brightly. She is passionate about instilling a love of reading, lifelong learning, and curiosity in her children.

 Alicia Juardo
Alicia Jurado

Alicia Jurado made a New Year's resolution to start yoga in 2014 and has not stopped since. She decided to dig deeper and fully immersed herself into the world of yoga. She enrolled and graduated from InnerLight Yoga School in 2015. She is now a proud RYT-200. Alicia teaches Vinyasa Yoga and Aerial Yoga. Her primary teaching locations are at StudioVIBE in Cary and Hot Asana in Durham. She teaches to all levels of practitioners. Alicia's goal for her students is to guide them into deepening their practice by exploring what their body is truly capable of and to take yoga into daily life. 

 Lorri Lofton
Lorri Lofton

Lorri Lofton , an Alabama native, has been in Charlotte for three years and made her way here by way of her management position in Wells Fargo. Lorri is the co-founder of Prosocialites where their mission is anchored in becoming a vessel of doing good for others. Prosocialites has managed to grow their user base to 3,500. Lorri and her partner recently launched a nonprofit - Prosocialites EMPOWERS. In her down time, Lorri is a freelance makeup artist, loves college football (Roll Tide), and enjoys networking with people.

Chanda Macias, Ph.D.
Dr. Chanda Macias

Chanda Macias, MBA, Ph.D., is the Owner and General Manager of the National Holistic Healing Center NHHC) in Washington D.C. Dr. Macias extensively trained at Howard University Cancer Center studying breast cancer and developing a model to understand how prostate cancer metastasizes to bone. Her previous work includes researching oral diseases and possible treatment options at Colgate Palmolive Company which contributed to the launch Total® toothpaste and Simply White®. Her passion to innovate has resulted in three U.S. Patents, and eleven Global Patients (World Intellectual Property Organization).

Nia Mason
Nia R.H. Mason

Nia R. H. Mason born and raised in Brooklyn, NY, grew up professionally in the fashion corporate sector working for Banana Republic, Saks Fifth Avenue, Bally, Gucci and Furla.  A Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) certified image consultant and a member of the Costume Designer Guild, she also garnered success in the television and film industry working on a number of films including Black Dynamite, Notorious and Yelling to the Sky.  In 2015, Nia birthed The Image Playbook as its founder and Chief Image Strategist. Nia resides in her hometown with her husband and two year old triplets.

Founder of Eating For Abs- Performance Nutrition, Bryndan Moore and his team are dedicated to helping people achieve their best bodies while fostering greater health. Coach Be has counseled numerous teams, schools and organizations on nutrition including internationally acclaimed soccer clubs, NCAA Division 1 teams, members of Team USA and Team Canada, Official Guinness Book of World Records title holders, and National champions. Ebony magazine recognized Moore as one of the 150 most influential Black people in America.

Charlotte Purvis is a corporate consultant, communication coach, and motivational speaker. She helps her clients move to higher levels of leadership by coaching them on their communication skills, guiding them in developing their executive presence, and supporting them as they create the vision and strategies for their teams. Charlotte is a proud graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Madison (B.S., M.S.). She lives in the Research Triangle and enjoys going home to her beloved Tuscaloosa.

Erica J. Stewartis a licensed esthetician who owns and operates ATOP + Forever Adorn Health & Beauty Studioin Raleigh, NC where she is a individual lash stylist and professional makeup artist. Erica has been blessed to work alongside phenomenal photographers for fashion/beauty shoots and be featured in magazines. She is consistently building her clientele, while striving to encourage those around her to learn their worth and follow their dreams Erica is very passionate about carrying out God's will and bringing out the beauty in all women. 

Carolina Foy Welch
Caroline Foy Welch

Caroline Foy Welch, is the President and General Manager of WTVD-TV in Raleigh-Durham in. Caroline has chief management responsibility for the ABC-owned property. She also oversees Raleigh-Durham's Live Well Network affiliate, the abc11.com website, and the station's various other new media and mobile businesses. Carolina serves on several boards in the Raleigh-Durham area. She is a native of Charlottesville, Virginia and earned her bachelor's degree in religious studies from the University of Virginia. Ms. Welch has two sons.

Brandi Williams, affectionately known as Bea, is an Accredited and award-winning public relations professional turned broker for change and  founder of BEAengaged, an engagement firm that helps entrepreneurs, businesses and community leaders create relationships that meet business objectives and have social impact. Brandi is also Charlotte’s Leadership Committee for the Hip Hop Caucus and a contributing writer for NewsOne.com and Essence.com.

Brandon Winston

Brandon Winston is all-too-familiar with what it takes to elude the snares of the system that can hinder the prosperity of brown and black communities. As direct result of his experiences, Brandon, co-founded Prosocialites and ProsocialitesRDU, and the nonprofit Prosocialites EMPOWERS. His professional background is in business relations, finance, cosmetology, public speaking and all things entrepreneurial. Brandon spends his free time coaching little league football and enjoying life to the fullest. He is a proud Shaw Bear, receiving his B.S. in Business Administration.

 Candace Dudley
Candace Dudley

Candace Dudley manages NC’s statewide Internship Program. The 10-week program educates college students about various roles and careers within state government while providing opportunities for public service. Candace also provides support to the State Internship Council Advisory Board which oversees the program and selects finalists for the internship opportunities.  She is a recent college graduate, former educator and an emerging leader.

Lisa Gabriel

Lisa Gabriel, CFP, has served as a member of the NC Council for Women Advisory Board since 2015 which provides advice on key issues impacting the lives of women, families and youth in NC. Lisa is an Investment Advisor Representative working at Pinafore Wealth Counsel, Inc. in Durham, NC and has  over 30 years of experience in the finance industry. Lisa is also a member of the Durham County Commission for Women.

 Bernetta Thigpen
Bernetta Thigpen

Bernetta Thigpin, M.S.W. provides technical assistance and consultation to board members, domestic violence and sexual violence service providers in the Northern Piedmont Region. Bernetta is a grant reviewer and reader of federal grants and member of the NC Victim Assistance Network and Batterer Intervention Program subcommittee.  She is a seasoned professional and mental health expert serving citizens of NC as a member of the NC Department of Administration/Council for Women & Youth Involvement Division.
